Where Precision Meets Heritage.
Before there was the legend, there was the blueprint. This Powder & Lead exclusive pays tribute to the quiet genius behind one of the most important innovations in modern firearm engineering — the 1966 Foster E. Sturtevant Patent No. 3,236,155, titled “Firearm Having an Auxiliary Bolt Closure Mechanism.”
Known today as the forward assist, Sturtevant’s refinement was the missing link that transformed Eugene Stoner’s revolutionary AR platform into a battle-ready weapon of reliability and precision. This shirt captures that pivotal piece of firearms history in stunning, archival detail — an authentic reproduction of the original U.S. patent drawing, rendered clean and sharp across the chest like the schematic it was meant to be.
Every line, every spring, every contour tells the story of American engineering — a fusion of genius, grit, and craftsmanship that defined the black rifle as we know it.
Design StoryFiled in July of 1964 and granted on February 22, 1966, Sturtevant’s patent introduced a mechanical solution to an age-old battlefield problem: ensuring a rifle could close its bolt under the harshest conditions. The invention — simple yet brilliant — became a defining feature of the AR-15 and M16 lineage.
The “Blueprint of the AR” design showcases the original patent illustration in high-resolution fidelity, complete with Sturtevant’s name, filing date, and the signature of his attorneys. It’s a piece of mechanical history brought to life, celebrating the mind and moment that made modern rifle reliability possible.
The layout has been carefully balanced to preserve the clean geometry of the blueprint while enhancing legibility — an ideal blend of authenticity and aesthetics.
